Embroidery on overused linen
each 210 x 150 cm

In February and March/April 2022, I created two large-format embroideries on overused linen, which address current political events, historical references and personal family history, influenced by the corona lockdowns and the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

Wandschoner 1 takes up an inscription that I found in the entrance area of a Viennese air-raid shelter and which was probably painted on the wall during the Second World War.

Influenced by the constant lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic, I started the embroidery before the outbreak of the Ukraine war. The sudden shift in the current subject matter prompted me to finish the work as quickly as possible and start on the next piece.

Wandschoner 2 is also embroidered on the overused linen that my grandmother had grown and spun in the 1940s in what was then Yugoslavia. The valuable trousseau was taken to Austria in 1944, along with a few other belongings, when she had to leave her former homeland as a German-speaking Danube Swabian.
