Installation 50 Chairs for MUMUTH, 2017
Lounge of MUMUTH, Art University Graz
50 wooden chairs, lacquered, upholstered, printed
art in space – first place in limited competition
In the lounge of MUMUTH, a place for events, presentations, discussions, and information sessions, there are 50 wooden chairs. A collection of chairs of different types and origins, all old, freshly renovated, painted with a new shine, some newly upholstered. Each chair bears a word on its seat that is used in the language of music, 50 different German words that describe sounds in the broadest sense but are also used in many other areas of life.
Words like screech, howl, cough, rattle, rumble, flare up…
Visitors and users of the MUMUTH Lounge are invited to choose a seat that suits their mental and physical posture or current mood, or perhaps their experience.
The chairs may offer a starting point for a conversation, the impetus for discussion, inviting to take a stand, to be active or to become active. If one decides on „flare up,“ they can embody this characteristic, whether in a calming or motivating form, depending on the occasion and their own mindset.
The installation can be seen as an artistic commentary on the connection between music, language and human experience, and it invites you to explore these connections in new and unconventional ways.
